Volkswagen Beetle: A Celebration of the World’s Most Popular Car

Volkswagen Beetle: A Celebration of the World’s Most Popular Car

The VW Beetle is simply the best-known and most-loved car in the history of the motor car. Amazingly, some of the earliest Beetles, now seven decades old, are still on the road, while more recent examples, particularly the classics from the late 1950s and ’60s are many an enthusiast’s pride and joy. Created through the ingenuity of Ferdinand Porsche, brought to the brink of series production by Hitler’s Nazis and rescued from oblivion by the British after the war, the Beetle soon developed into a phenomenon under the guardianship of Heinz Nordhoff, the VW boss for two decades. Overwhelmingly successful in over 150 countries across the world, most notably in the USA; when the car finally fell from grace in Europe after Nordhoff’s death, it was destined to enjoy a revitalized and lengthy swansong in South America. The legendary Beetle’s intriguing story is unraveled in this fascinating and handsome book.

The Art of the Airport: The World’s Most Beautiful Terminals

The Art of the Airport: The World’s Most Beautiful Terminals

Three quarters of a million people are in a plane somewhere right now. Many millions travel by air each day. For most of us, the experience of being in an airport is to be endured rather than appreciated, with little thought for the quality of the architecture. No matter how hard even the world’s best architects have tried, it is difficult to make a beautiful airport.

And yet such places do exist. Cathedrals of the jet age that offer something of the transcendence of flight even in an era of mass travel and budget fares. Here are twenty-one of the most beautiful airports in the world.

The book features:
Wellington International Airport, ‘The Rock’ shaped like the dangerous cliffs of a local legend
Kansai International Airport, Renzo Piano’s gigantic project built on three mountains of landfill
Shenzhen International Airport, a manta ray shaped terminal putting this booming region on the map
Daocheng Yading Airport, the world’s highest civilian airport in the middle of the Tibetan mountains
Chhatrapati Shijavi International Airport, rising from the slums of Mumbai like a Mogul palace
Queen Tamar Airport, a playfully iconic modern airport nestled in the mountains of Georgia
King Abdulaziz International Airport, the gateway to Mecca resembling a Bedouin city of tents
Pulkovo Airport, mirroring the city of St Petersburg with bridges, squares and art
Berlin-Tegel Airport, ultramodernity, 1970s style
Copenhagen Airport, an icon from the golden age of air travel
Franz Josef Strauß Airport, sober and easy to negotiate, Munich’s model airport
Paris Charles du Gaulle Airport, the brutalist icon that launched the career of airport architect Paul Andreu
London Stansted Airport, Norman Foster’s return to the golden age of air travel
Lleida-Alguaire Airport, a relic of Catalonia’s early 21st century building boom
Madrid-Barajas Airport, Richard Rogers and Antonio Lamela’s calm, bamboo-panelled Terminal 4
Marrakesh Ménara Airport, a blend of 21st century construction and traditional Morrocan design

The IROC Porsches: The International Race of Champions, Porsche’s 911 RSR, and the Men Who Raced Them

The IROC Porsches: The International Race of Champions, Porsche’s 911 RSR, and the Men Who Raced Them

The IROC Porsches chronicles the original International Race of Champions 1973–74 season, in which the world’s top drivers battled in identical Porsche RSRs to claim the title of world’s greatest racing driver.

The Porsche 911 is among the most historic, sought after, and read about cars in history. Early cars are now highly valued collectibles, and modern 911s remain front-line international GT racing cars. There is considerable worldwide interest in Porsche racing activities, from factory entered and sponsored teams to the club-level racing scene.

It is against this rich racing background that The IROC Porsches relates one of the most interesting and storied episodes in 911 racing history. The premier season of the International Race of Champions series was founded around purpose-built, virtually identical 1974 3.0-liter Porsche 911 RSR racing cars to be driven by racing greats from IndyCar, Formula 1, NASCAR, and other international racing series. The premise was simple and brilliant: put the world’s best racing drivers in identical cars and the series winner could claim “best in the world.” Former racing driver, mega businessman, and racing team owner Roger Penske was the original force behind the series, and he worked directly with the Porsche factory to get these special IROC Porsches designed and built.

The depth of talent and breadth of racing disciplines embodied in the series was stunning: Emerson Fittipaldi (Formula 1), AJ Foyt (Indy), Richard Petty (NASCAR), Al Unser (Indy), George Follmer (Can-Am), and more. The drivers’ incentive to compete was manifold, first being to demonstrate the talents and abilities of their own particular brands of racing. Not to be understated was the draw of significant payout to winners. Consummate Porsche racer Mark Donohue won the first year’s championship.

The IROC series would carry on several decades, but never again would it feature Porsche and never again would it field such a diverse selection of race drivers. That first season was truly lightning in a bottle.

Aston Martin: Made in Britain

Aston Martin: Made in Britain

From bestselling author, racer and stunt driver Ben Collins – the man who was The Stig – comes a story of spies, speed and hard-driving genius: a driver’s love letter to one of the world’s best-loved machines.

Aston Martin’s first, wickedly fast models were forged at a time when Ferrari’s premises at Maranello was nothing but a ploughed field. This book celebrates a century of innovators who kept the fire burning brightly for over a century, from the visionary pioneers Martin and Bamford to modern-day design guru Adrian Newey; from a glamorous web of pre- and post-war spies and racing drivers, to David Brown and the achingly beautiful DB models beloved of Bonds past and present.

Ben Collins explores the car with the double-o prefix from a unique perspective behind the wheel, carving through country lanes in his father’s V8 Vantage, driving Aston Martins in four James Bond movies and competing against them in the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race.

Ultimately, this is a very British success story: of a triumph of engineering that has burned brightly from the Roaring 20s to the 2020s, and an iconic car that never says die.

Racing Together 1949 – 2016: MotoGP

Racing Together 1949 – 2016: MotoGP

This eye-catching book tells the story of World Championship motorcycle racing with particular emphasis on the past 25 years and the role of Dorna, the international sports management and marketing group. Spain-based Dorna became involved in motorcycle racing in 1992 and set about stabilising the ailing World Championship, which had run since 1949, and introducing a new era of direction and harmony, and of sporting and commercial success. The effect of Dorna’s efforts is abundantly apparent in the present-day stature of MotoGP throughout the world. In this book the world’s best motorcycle-racing authors tell the entire story – of the racing itself and the Dorna backdrop to it – of those 25 years in a lively style that will appeal not only to those involved professionally in the sport but also its millions of fans world-wide. * The Dorna story, written by Dennis Noyes, is a remarkable behind-the-scenes insight, especially into those early days embracing the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme), IRTA (International Road Racing Teams Association) and MSMA (Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association). The stories of the battles, the money and the involvement of Bernie Ecclestone are brilliantly divulged by the key players. * The 25-year period from 1992 to 2016 is divided into five main chapters about the sport, each written by a leading journalist. * The sporting chapters each cover a five-year period, as follows, with the first World Champion of each period named: Wayne Rainey (1992-1996), Mick Doohan (1997-2001), Valentino Rossi (2002-2006), Casey Stoner (2007-2011) and Jorge Lorenzo (2012-2017). * A section called `Battles and battlegrounds’ relives some of the greatest moments of the past 25 years. * Important national stories also have their own chapters, covering the history of racing in Britain, Spain, Japan, Italy, the United States, Australia, Germany and France. * Technical perspective comes from renowned technical writer Kevin Cameron.

Lisunov LI-2, The soviet DC-3

Lisunov LI-2, The soviet DC-3

When they bought a manufacturing license for the DC-3 in 1935, the Soviet aircraft industry’s decision makers had no way of knowing the place the Douglas airliner would come to occupy in aviation’s hall of fame. Yet, even less did they know of the part the Soviet spin-off would play in the nation’s aviation history. Suitably adapted to make use of Russian engines and structural materials, the DC-3 entered production as the PS-84; and gradually the design drifted further apart from the US original. In 1941 production was moved from Moscow to Tashkent to escape the advancing German troops and the aircraft was redesignated Li2. The Li-2 served an innumerable multitude of tasks, including the night bomber role during the war and flights in support of Soviet polar research in the post-war years. This addition to the ever-popular Red Star series describes all known versions of the PS-84/Li-2 and gives operational details as it explored what is probably the least-known aspect of the history of one of the world’s best-known airliners. Four pages of line drawings are included.

Can Am Thunder DVD

Can Am Thunder DVD

The mighty machines of the Can-Am Championship must surely be leading candidates for the title of ‘most awesome racing cars ever built’…
Some forty years ago they put out over 1000 horsepower in their most-developed form and hit speeds of up to 220mph despite aerodynamics that were experimental at best and highly dangerous at worst! They made the Grand Prix F1 cars of the day look tame by comparison.
And even today, the ‘Can-Am thunder’ still rumbles as huge crowds flock to historic race meetings wherever these incredible cars appear.
Porsche, McLaren, Lola and Shadow were the Championship-winning cars, with Chaparral, Bryant Ti22, March, BRM and Ferrari as the challengers. We focus in depth upon all of these as they rumble and roar around tracks like Laguna Seca with its legendary downhill ‘corkscrew’ turn. We even recall the days of the ‘Interserie’ – Europe’s Can-Am equivalent – by filming at the Nurburgring round of the current Orwell Supersports Cup series for historic Can-Am cars.
In making this up-close examination of the mighty machines of the Can-Am, we use a great combination of modern action footage, rare archive film and almost 100 superb pictures from the best photographers of the day.
We hear reminiscences from the three Can-Am champions still with us – John Surtees, George Follmer and Jackie Oliver – as well as from Jim Hall – the designer of the incredible Chaparral ‘fan car’ – and its driver, Vic Elford.
In addition, Hurley Haywood tells us what it was like to wrestle with the mighty turbocharged Porsche 917/10 in the heat of Can-Am competition. He is one of the world’s best-ever sports car drivers with three wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, five in the Daytona 24 Hours and two in the Sebring 12 Hours to his credit!
Finally, Peter Bryant, creator of the successful Bryant Ti22 and Shadow Mk2 cars, recalls what it was like trying to design a 220mph racer without the aid of computers or wind tunnels!
All of this is woven into reminiscences by the world’s acknowledged ‘number one’ Can-Am guru. Author and photographer, Pete Lyons recalls the stories that led to his best-selling books on the series and delves into his photo archives to take us back to the Can-Am era. In this he is joined by another award-winning author and photographer focusing on those awesome days, Dave Friedman.
Up until now the definitive documentary on the cars of the Can-Am has never been made. This is it!
Bonus features:
Peter Bryant, Can-Am Challenger – He was a self-taught designer responsible for two of the most successful Can-Am challengers. Here’s the inside story by Peter Bryant.
Pete Lyons Looks Back – Acknowledged as the world’s leading expert on the Can-Am series, Pete Lyons recalls some personal memories from the day.

Sidewinder: Creative Missile Development at China Lake

Sidewinder: Creative Missile Development at China Lake

In the mid-1950s a small group of overworked, underpaid scientists and engineers on a remote base in the Mojave Desert developed a weapon no one had asked for but everyone in the weapons industry desired. This is the story of how that unorthodox team, led by visionary Bill McLean, overcame U.S. Navy bureaucracy and other more heavily funded projects to develop the world’s best air-to-air missile. Author Ron Westrum examines that special time and place–when the old American work ethic and “can do” spirit were a vital part of U.S. weapons development–to discover how this dedicated team was able to create a simple and inexpensive missile. Today, many decades after its invention, the Sidewinder missile is still considered one of the best that America has to offer.
In a time of billion-dollar weapons development contracts, astronomical cost overruns, and defense acquisitions scandals, this revealing, highly readable tale about one of the most successful weapons in history should be of interest to anyone concerned with national security.
Airline Maps: A Century of Art and Design

Airline Maps: A Century of Art and Design

A nostalgic and celebratory look back at one hundred years of passenger flight, featuring full-color reproductions of route maps and posters from the world’s most iconic airlines, from the author of bestselling cult classic Transit Maps of the World.

In this gorgeously illustrated collection of airline route maps, Mark Ovenden and Maxwell Roberts look to the skies and transport readers to another time. Hundreds of images span a century of passenger flight, from the rudimentary trajectory of routes to the most intricately detailed birds-eye views of the land to be flown over. Advertisements for the first scheduled commercial passenger flights featured only a few destinations, with stunning views of the countryside and graphics of biplanes. As aviation took off, speed and mileage were trumpeted on bold posters featuring busy routes. Major airlines produced highly stylized illustrations of their global presence, establishing now-classic brands. With trendy and forward-looking designs, cartographers celebrated the coming together of different cultures and made the earth look ever smaller.

Eventually, fleets got bigger and routes multiplied, and graphic designers have found creative new ways to display huge amounts of information. Airline hubs bring their own cultural mark and advertise their plentiful destination options. Innovative maps depict our busy world with webs of overlapping routes and networks of low-cost city-to-city hopping. But though flying has become more commonplace, Ovenden and Roberts remind us that early air travel was a glamorous affair for good reason. Airline Maps is a celebration of graphic design, cartographic skills and clever marketing, and a visual feast that reminds us to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
